Sub Genres

Chick lit has expanded to such a degree now that there are many “sub-genres”. This is good news for those of you who prefer to read just books about, say, single women, or mothers, or weddings. There is something for everyone!

Please note: I did not personally coin most of these terms. These are not ‘official’ names. ;)

I am also writing a research paper on chik-lit(although i cant decide if i want to do romance). It has to include literary critics. Yea, info is really hard to find on chick lit. Do you also have any suggestions?

  • I enjoyed the recent New York Times article on “Yummy Mummy” literature, which I guess they’re putting forward as another sub-genre. Citation:

Skurnick, Lizzie. “Chick Lit, the Sequel: Yummy Mummy.” New York Times: Dec. 17, 2006.

One thing they noted was the rise of blogs and their ilk for engaging reading about women’s issues in a light, entertaining, immediate format. dooce.com is the gold standard for “mommy” style stories.

I have a client who is developing her own book online, at http://www.thenovelette.com . It’s been interesting to contemplate how women’s issue literature works online, and how the “chick lit” title might fit. I would really appreciate any feedback on our site from others who enjoy the genre.

Best of luck for happy reading and writing!
