Rachel and Darcy have been best friends for years and they couldn’t be more different. Rachel’s level-headed and a lawyer and Darcy’s the more flamboyant social butterfly who’s in PR and used to getting her own way. Darcy throws Rachel a thirtieth birthday that somehow winds up with Darcy the center of attention and Rachel spending the majority of the time with her friend from law school, Dex, who also happens to be Darcy’s fiancé. One thing leads to another and Rachel finds herself in love with Dex and he with her.

The situation doesn’t get any easier since the three have joined in a summer rental in the Hamptons with a few other friends. Darcy’s none the wiser since she’s found herself a bit of a diversion in Marcus, Dex’s friend, who also happens to be casually dating Rachel. To top it all off, Dex and Darcy’s wedding is only weeks away and Darcy discovers that she’s pregnant with Marcus’ baby. Everything comes to a head when Darcy catches Dex at Rachel’s apartment but not before she tells Rachel she’s pregnant and the baby isn’t Dex’s. With the wedding called off, Rachel and Dex together and a friendship shattered, Darcy finds for the first time in her life that she can’t have what she really wants, which leads the reader to the sequel, Something Blue.
